Born and raised in post-World War II Germany, Hans Jorge Stahlschmidt gravitated toward a career in the mental health field at an early age. He would later earn degrees in psychology from the University of Tübingen and Freie Universität Berlin in 1972 and 1976, respectively. Certified with a psychology license in Germany, he practiced in the subsequent years before relocating to the United States in 1982. Having to establish a thriving life from the ground up in his new homeland, he opened a private practice in 1988, providing services as a clinical psychologist with specialties in couples therapy, intimacy and sexuality, differentiation issues, and life transitions. The practice, through which he wields a compassionate approach to the mental wellness of his patients, has been active ever since.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Stahlschmidt has treated couples with such issues as infidelity, self-esteem, and relationship conflict, as well as those suffering from anxiety, trauma, depression, and other disorders, with a particular focus on men’s issues. He deploys such methods as attachment theory, relational psychoanalytic paradigm, differentiation approach, and systems theory. He bolstered his credentials in 1996 when he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute in California.
More than a decade later, Dr. Stahlshmidt earned certification as a PACT (Psychological Approach to Couple Therapy) Therapist, kickstarting his successful career at the PACT Institute, LLC, which provides education and training for couples counselors and other mental health clinicians, where he’s excelled as a core faculty member and trainer since 2014. In 2024, he was appointed as dean for student affairs at the institute; his wife, Patricia, whom he married in 1999, also serves as a psychologist and teaches there.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Stahlschmidt has found success for decades as a published poet. He authored the book “Wetlands” in 1998 and contributed articles to several literary and professional journals over the years. Additionally, he’s long been involved in numerous civic organizations, such as the Sunrise Movement, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and Greenpeace International. Since 2010, he’s remained connected to his field as a member of the American Psychological Association.
Attributing his success to the unwavering support and guidance from his colleagues and mentors throughout his life, as well as the invaluable support of his wife, Dr. Stahlschmidt looks forward to a future of continued success in the mental health field. He also aims to broaden his expertise in advanced therapy models, integrating principles of systems theory and exploring the fascinating developments in quantum physics. His advice to the next generation of mental health professionals is “to not lie and not give up.”
Dr. Stahlshmidt enjoys writing and attending theater performances in his spare time. He is also a proud father, stepfather, and grandfather.
